What is WP Media Directories?+
A paid WordPress plugin that adds physical folders to the native Media Library—real directories under your upload basedir.
Is there a free version?+
No. WP Media Directories is paid-only. Every license includes the full product; plans differ by site count and support.
Is this like FileBird?+
FileBird uses virtual folders. WP Media Directories uses physical directories and a native library tree. They cannot mount folder UIs together.
Will moving files break my posts?+
Use Fast to update files/metadata only. Use Rewrite to also update URLs in post content and excerpts. Large moves prompt you to choose.
What is Unassigned?+
Attachments not inside any Folder—including files still in WordPress year/month paths.
What does Reconcile do?+
Imports unknown files under the upload basedir and flags attachments with missing files.
Does it work on multisite?+
Yes, per site. Each site has its own folders and settings. License by site count.
Do I need manage_options?+
Editors with upload_files use the tree and Sync now. Settings and schedule require manage_options.
Can I hide directories without deleting them?+
Yes—settings denylist/overrides or a hide marker file on disk.
What WordPress versions are supported?+
Requires WordPress 6.0+ and PHP 7.4+ (per plugin headers).

Will it work with S3 / offload plugins?+

Can I switch from FileBird without losing files?+
Yes—files on disk stay; virtual folder labels don't auto-become directories. Follow /switch-from-filebird.
